For Cape Town-based illustrator, artist and designer Astrid Blumer, art and creativity have always been at the centre of her world. As a little girl, all she wanted to do was draw and make dolls' clothes on her little pink sewing machine. After finishing school, she initially pursued fashion design and worked in the wardrobe department on film sets while launching her own knitwear clothing label. On the side, she also started working for an illustration studio specialising in children’s books, and soon the illustration bug bit. After six years at the studio, she started freelancing in illustration, art and design and has since built up an impressive portfolio of projects ranging from children’s books to branding design and product packaging. Often inspired by nature, her work reflects themes of whimsical scenery, leafy patterns and playful design. She paints with watercolour, ink and gouache in traditional and digital media.
