It’s said that every time you buy from an independent business an actual happy person does a dance. At Mia Mélange we know who’d be dancing — Babsy, Fina, Verona to name a few — because in this business every handcrafted item has a Maker, every Maker has a Name, and every Name is a significant thread in its (increasingly international) success. From multicoloured tassels to minimalist floor baskets, chic clutch bags to macramé hanging planters, Mia Mélange has a product line as diverse as the women whose own hands have lovingly coiled and stitched each chord in place. Celebrating these ancient crafting techniques, Mia Danieli was determined to empower local women with the skills, creative outlet, and access to a global market when she founded the business in 2014. Three years’ later the reins — or rather the locally sourced 100% cotton ropes — were handed over to Jeanneke Malan under whose leadership a Handmade Global Design ‘Best New Product Award’ was won. Of course, it’s not all about awards (for Jeanneke). It’s the quality, innovation, and sustainability of a business providing opportunities for women in their surroundings. And for that, we’re roped in.
