Over meals of chickpea stew and Çay tea during her time in Istanbul, Madeleine Hugo discovered a shared love of family, food and life’s simple pleasures — together with her newfound passion for the traditional artisanship of Turkish towels. This South African quickly knew that she needed to bring these soft and lightweight traditional towels home and The Cotton Company was born. This Cape Town brand uses South African aesthetic as inspiration for the designs which are then lovingly created by a family-run team of artisans in Turkey. Her towel range has since expanded from the classic cotton towel, to include blankets, throws, robes and hand towels in different traditional weaves.
